Former President George H. Bush and Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski recently completed a public service announcement for the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, a nonprofit organization that is committed to fighting cancer. The organization is made up of a group of Chief Executive Officers brought together by President Bush four years ago to do something bold in the fight against cancer.
There are over 500,000 deaths related to cancer in the United States each year. Cancer is diagnosed in 50 percent of men and in one in every three women.
The good news is two-thirds of cancer deaths can be prevented. About 60 percent of cancer is related to tobacco, poor diet and lack of exercise.
Coach K is a member of the CEO Roundtable and the group designed a program called the "CEO Cancer Gold Standard" that addresses three goals: risk reduction, early detection and quality care. Six CEO member companies -- AstraZeneca, Mutual of America Insurance Company, GlaxoSmithKline, OSI Pharmaceuticals, SAS Institute and Johnson & Johnson -- were among the first to step up and pledge to meet this high standard of excellence.
