Coach K and International BasketballCoach K has always been an active part of USA Basketball in various roles, serving as past chairman of the Player Selection Committee for all of the United States’ teams, including the 1991 Pan Am and 1992 Olympic teams. Coach K was an assistant to Chuck Daly (a former Duke assistant coach) at the Olympics and won the gold medal in Barcelona with the “Dream Team.” Christian Laettner was a member of that team, while 1994 graduate Grant Hill was a part of “Dream Team II” in Atlanta. Coach K was the USA head coach in 1990 when he led the Americans to a bronze medal at the World Championships and a silver medal at the Goodwill Games in Seattle. He also paced the USA to a silver medal at the 1987 World University Games and was a special assistant to Bob Knight at the 1984 Olympics. As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions. On October 26, 2005, it was announced that Mike Krzyzewski would be the head coach of the United States Senior National Team Program. In short, Krzyzewski’s mission was to re-establish the USA’s position in international basketball by coaching a three-year program made up of a pool of 24 players — the first of its kind in the United States — leading up to the 2008 Olympic Games in China.
